Sacraments

The seven sacraments are important rituals within the Catholic Church that symbolize and convey divine grace to its members.  Each sacrament holds a unique significance in the spiritual journey of a believer.

Baptism

Baptism is a sacrament of admission to the Catholic faith.   Through the pouring of water it brings about the remission of Original sin and all personal sins bringing sanctifying grace to the individual.  A person is to be baptized only once in their life and the Catholic church recognizes baptisms done by most other  Christian denominations as valid.  It is recommended that parents contact the parish priest to make arrangements to attend a Baptism Prep class and register for baptism.

Holy Eucharist - Holy communion

Holy Communion is a sacrament that is a central rite of Catholic worship and can be received daily.   During the Mass the priest consecrates bread and wine which are transubstantiated into the body and blood of Christ.  It is a memorial of christ’s sacrifice on the cross and his Last Supper with his disciples.

Reconciliation or Penance

Also known as Confession is the sacrament of forgiveness and reconciliation with God and the Church.  It involves confessing one’s sins to a priest, who offers absolution and guidance, bringing spiritual healing and restoring the relationship with God.  It can be done as often as needed.   The sacrament is offered at St Theresa of Avila by appointment.

Conformation

Confirmation is the third sacrament and serves to “confirm” a baptized person in their faith.  It usually occurs at age 12 for children or as a part of RICA and Baptism for an adult convert.  It involves the anointing with holy oil and the laying on of hands by a Bishop, sealing the person with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and empowering them to live as a witness of Christ. It strengthens ones bond with the church and her mission.

Anointing of the Sick

This sacrament provides comfort and spiritual healing to those who are seriously ill or nearing the end of their lives.  Through the anointing with holy oil and the prayers of the priests it seeks to bring strength, peace and the forgiveness of sins.  Call the priest at 618-548-0899.

Holy Orders

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which bishops, priests, and deacons are ordained for the service of the Church.  It involves the laying on of hands by a bishop, consecrating the individual and bestowing upon them the authority to cary our sacred duties.
